Why learn a new language?
The benefits of learning foreign languages go far beyond just being able to communicate in another language. Apart from inculcating respect and
understanding for different cultures in children studies have repeatedly indicated enhanced cognitive development, creativity, divergent thinking and higher order thinking skills in multilingual children.
• When children are adequately exposed to two or more languages at an early age, they are more flexible and creative (Bamford and Mizokawa, 1991)
• People who are competent in more than one language outscore those who are speakers of only one language on tests of verbal and nonverbal intelligence (Bruck, Lambert, and Tucker, 1974; Hakuta, 1986; Weatherford, 1986)
• Multilingual children reach higher levels of cognitive development at an earlier age than their monolingual peers (Hamayan, 1986)
• Children who have studied a foreign language perform better on standardized tests and tests of basic skills in English, math and social studies
